Designer Profile
With 30 plus years of award winning experience Joann will take your style, needs and budget and create an environment that will change your life. Imagine a home that is organized and effortless. Imagine coming home to your personal refuge from the rest of the world. Joann can make the home you have imagined your reality, creating homes, one house at a time. We not only align our clients with their homes, but as a wonderful result, we align our clients more with their life’s experiences. Your home is an extension of who you are. The place where you laugh, love, eat, play, regenerate, heal and create. What we do is enhance that.
Joann’s approach to every project is unique, just as every family is unique. She is able to take a client’s priorities and makes them her own. Be it the timeline, budget or any other constraint, Joann is able to address the concerns of her client and gauges the success of a project based on those parameters. By understanding your family dynamic, needs and activities, Joann is able to design from a practical perspective. Since this approach requires a personal relationship between client and designer, each project is approached with the sensitivity this type of relationship dictates. By first interpreting your functional needs, she is able to create beautiful, effortless, organized and efficient spaces.
Joann subscribes to a design approach commonly referred to as Universal Design. Broadly defined, a universal approach to design takes the position that the built environment should serve the greatest number of people, regardless of age, mobility or physical stature. This means you won’t get to the end of your project and wish that bathroom doorway was wider to accommodate your active daughter’s temporary wheelchair after a skiing accident or wish for a full bath and bedroom on the first floor when an aging parent moves in with your family. Universal design makes sense for a number of reasons including accessibility and comfort as well as resale value. There is nothing as beautiful as a space that is easily livable.
This is one of the many benefits of working with an educated and experienced designer. Not only will your designer respond to your individual needs but will also keep in mind the bigger picture considerations of your home. Many people can create a space that looks good enough to impress the neighbors, but it takes a professional to create a space that is effortless to live in and easily maintained, while projecting the lifestyle that is uniquely yours.
A Pittsburgh native, my design career started in Florida when I relocated there in 1980. There I worked for several large design firms designing model homes, country clubs and high-end residences. I started my own firm in 1987, located in Boca Raton, focusing on designing residential homes. I continue to maintain an Interior Design License in the state of Florida.
I relocated back to the Pittsburgh area in 1998 and worked for a large architectural/design firm as a project manager until 2006, when I started my own business again. I much prefer the one on one contact with the client that owning your own firm provides. I served on the Board of Directors for the local ASID Chapter and am also a Past President, and currently serve on the IDLCPA Board of Directors whose primary focus is to introduce Interior Design licensing in Pennsylvania.
